Before we get started, let’s clear up a couple of things. There are plenty of other UFC fighters who are very jacked but have never tested positive for roids. In early MMA, you’d see a lot more muscular physiques than you do today, because huge muscles aren’t as useful as technique and having to supply oxygen to them will make you gas out sooner, and you really don’t want to gas out when there’s another guy across from you trying to kick your head clean off. Until recently, it really wasn’t very hard to pass a UFC drug test, and there are even a few instances of the UFC allegedly burying test results until after a big fight took place so that they wouldn’t have to cancel it.
We’re going to be using the term “steroids” as a blanket statement to cover all sorts of performance enhancing drugs that these guys have tested positive for. Not all of these banned substances are actually roids. Some of them are masking agents, and so on and so forth, so technically not everyone on this list actually tested positive for full on roids, but they have all officially popped for some sort of banned substance or another.
GSP has never failed a test:
But he often gets accused of juicing by MMA fans. But this list is only going to focus on guys that have actually failed tests, not just people that get accused a lot. We’re also leaving out the countless guys who have failed drug tests that don’t look juicy at all.
With all of that out of the way, let’s get started.
8. Cyborg
It took forever to get her into the UFC, partly because they just didn’t have any women’s weight classes that were big enough. Cyborg is arguably the best female fighter on the planet, but she did fail a test a few years ago which she’s taken tons of criticism for. Depending on the fighter, sometimes fans overtook a failed test pretty quickly (Anderson Silva, for example) whereas othertimes the fighter’s never seem to be able to get past it. Cyborg got a lot of slack because everyone was on Ronda’s nuts for years, but now that Rousey is out of the spotlight, people are finally starting to realize that Cyborg is not only the most dangerous woman in the UFC, but also a total sweetheart and very likable.
7. Brock Lesnar
When Brock announced he was coming back to MMA, it was huge news. He was there to save the UFC 200 event after Jon Jones failed a… you guessed it… drug test.
The whole situation was kind of sketchy because they waited until the very last minute to announced Brock’s return, which helped him avoid a usually-mandatory 4 month testing period. It wasn’t enough, though, because he still tested positive before the competition took place (But the results weren’t revealed until after the fight), and also failed another test that took place on the night of the fight. His opponent, Mark Hunt, was rightfully upset – he was the one getting smashed in the face by a roided up BEAST of a human being.
This one really shouldn’t surprise anyone, though.
6. Jon Jones
Let’s get this out of the way, too. Jones tested positive for estrogen blockers, which are a common thing to take as you’re cycling off. He’s also had somewhat sketchy t-levels in the past, which raised some red flags, but didn’t get busted for anything related to PEDs until recently. He has tested positive for cocaine in the past, however.
Jones has been vocally against PED use, almost comically. In an old interview, he talked about how he was a snitch when he was a kid. How he was the guy that would tattle-tale on other kids even for smoking a joint. He’d go on about how terrible it is to take PEDs.
Chances are he wasn’t taking estrogen blockers just for the fun of it, but who knows? He didn’t techically get busted for roids, but USADA (The people who handle the enhanced drug testing for the UFC) say that a positive test for estrogen blockers (which are also banned substance kind of like Kratom) is a pretty good sign that somebody just finished a cycle.
Jones was really upset after learning that the UFC may have known about a positive test from Vitor Belfort, a former opponent of Jon’s, before they fought.
5. Gleison Tibau
This guy’s a workhorse veteran with over 25 fights in the UFC alone, and an overall career record of 33–12 after having his most recent win overturned to a loss for failing a test. He failed an out of competition test, as well as an in-competition test. Similar situation to Brock. They don’t always get the rest results quickly enough to cancel a fight in time, which seems kind of counter productive if the main priority is fighter safety. Sometimes, it seems like the main priority is “The show must go on”.
He’s currently serving a two year suspension. He admitted to taking EPO, and said ‘I took it without imagining I was doing something wrong’.
4. Yoel Romero
In Yoel’s case, he took a tainted supplement and was able to avoid the mandatory 2 year ban for first time offenders by proving that even an off-the-shelf version of his supplement contained the banned substances that he failed for, which is something described as stimulating growth hormone release “through a pituitary and hypothalamic receptor.”
Of course, the old “tained supplement” excuse is getting really popular these days, but maybe that’s a good reason. There’s an athlete in another sport who recently tested positive, and it was revealed that the banned substance was in their TAP WATER. It’s an athletes responsability to be careful what they’re putting in their body, but are you really supposed to get your tap water tested on a regular basis for roids?
3. Hector Lombard
This beast of a man was suspended for one year after a positive test. Here’s what he had to say:
“I have never knowingly put a prohibited substance into my body. That being said, just prior to my fight, I took a substance which I believe to have been acceptable to use. I relied on people I trusted to provide me with the correct information, and I take full responsibility for not getting more information about this product prior to my use.”
Are these fighters just taking random things that people in the gym hand them?
2. Alistair Overeem
This guy’s just one of the biggest examples of being super juicy in MMA history. He blamed his failed test on the fact that he was eating “horse meat” to bulk up, so that’s become a huge meme over the years.
When he was in his roiding prime, people called him UBEREEM. He looked like a total beast out there, mixed with worst class MMA and kickboxing skills, he’s still a super dangerous fighter, even thought he’s let go of some of the muscle mass.
1. Rousimar Palheres
This guy got banned from the UFC because he would hold on to submissions for too long, and it shouldn’t be a huge surprise that he failed a test. People have speculated that he might be kind of slow, and ultimately the UFC decided it was too dangerous to keep him around. He’s also a dirty fighter, and can be seen raking his fingers across his opponent’s eyes when the ref isn’t looking (And even when the ref is looking.)
Still, it didn’t take long for other promotions to try to snap him up, because he’s still one of the top welterweights on the planet.
