We’re all aware that the Crossfit community are huge supporters of the right to bear small arm muscles, but now they’re going public with their support of the right to bear arms.
We don’t want to get all political on you, because this guy already did. But gun control is a hot issue right now, it has been for a very long time and once again it’s heating up.
On the extremities of either side, you’ve got people with big opinions who all seem to know exactly how to fix the problem of excessive gun violence in America. Somewhere in the middle of the issue, you’ve got people who realize that it’s a nuanced thing and it’s not necessarily cut and dry. You shouldn’t give every single person a gun, and you shouldn’t get rid of every legal gun either.
Another issue that has fanatics on both sides is Crossfit. The bodybuilding community is quick to attack Crossfit as a dangerous passtime that encourages cult-like behavior, poor form, excessive injuries, and really expensive gym memberships. Crossfitters, on the other hand, enjoy the sense of support and community, the unique variety of exercises, and they accept the additional risks that they may encounter.
Now, regardless of which side of the debate you fall into, we can all agree that guns should be kept out of the hands of the mentally ill, which raises quite the conundrum when you’re talking about giving free guns to people who actively go out of their way to pay a small fortune to exercise incorrectly in order to win at a sport that’s not even a sport.
The Crossfit Games, and their biggest sponsor Reebok, are both catching a lot of heat after announcing that they’re going to be giving away Glock handguns to the winners of their upcoming event, rather than typical trophies or medals…
Continued:
The Director of Crossfit is a former SEAL, and so he has a better understanding of guns, gun safety, and responsible gun ownership – along with a greater respect for guns and their role in the world overall – than a lot of the general population.
A handgun is certainly more valuable than a trophy, and a lot more useful too, especially if you need to point it at somebody, like Samuel L. Jackson in Pulp Fiction, while yelling “TELL ME ABOUT YOUR CROSSFIT WORKOUT AGAIN!!!”
But people who aren’t huge fans of guns think that it’s pretty poor timing, since so many tragic shootings have been all over the media lately, not just in America but around the world.
Bodybuilders who support the 2nd amendment are the most torn up by this news. On the one hand, they’re into what Crossfit is doing, but on the other hand it’s still Crossfit. It’s like when a catchy song comes on the radio, but then a few weeks later you find out it was Bieber or Taylor Swift.
Let’s face it, people who lift are going to have more testosterone than the average person, and people with lower testosterone tend to be less in favor of guns in general. Rather than taking action to protect themselves, the low-test crowd prefers wait around for an alpha to show up to protect them instead.
